Ousmane Kouyate
Ousmane Kalil Kouyaté aka Ousmane Kora a grandi à Dakar, Sénégal, avant de rejoindre à 14 ans la capitale guinéenne. Il apprend la kora mais aussi le chant et le djembé dès son plus jeune âge auprès de ses illustres grands-pères, les virtuoses de la kora Soundioulou Cissokho et Mbady Kouyaté et connaît avec eux ses premières expériences de scène à partir de 1994.
Avide de s’ouvrir à de nouveaux styles et de partager ses influences, il s’installe à Paris en 2009 et fonde avec ses amis d’enfance Sory Diabaté aka Papus Diabaté et feu Ibrahima Bah aka Kounkouré le groupe Universal Groove, trio explosif qui investit aussitôt les salles parisiennes. Surnommé le « prince de la Kora », Ousmane Kouyaté développe avec ses deux compères une fusion afro-jazz tirée de la musique mandingue et teintée de parfums pop, funk, soul, blues ou rock, qu’il accompagne au chant en malinké, en soussou et en peul.
Ousmane Kalil Kouyaté, also known as Ousmane Kora, grew up in Dakar, Senegal, before moving to the Guinean capital at the age of 14. He learned to play the kora, as well as singing and playing the djembe, from a very young age with his illustrious grandfathers, kora virtuosos Soundioulou Cissokho and Mbady Kouyaté, and had his first experiences on stage with them in 1994.
Eager to explore new styles and share his influences, he moved to Paris in 2009 and founded the group Universal Groove with his childhood friends Sory Diabaté, aka Papus Diabaté, and the late Ibrahima Bah, aka Kounkouré. This explosive trio immediately took Parisian venues by storm. Nicknamed the “Prince of the Kora,” Ousmane Kouyaté developed with his two companions an Afro-jazz fusion drawn from Mandinka music and tinged with pop, funk, soul, blues, and rock influences, which he accompanied with vocals in Malinké, Soussou, and Fulani.
